Description
Snapping turtle. Head of a snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) with its mouth open. This turtle lives in swamps, ponds and lakes throughout the Americas. It is omnivorous, eating plant material as well as invertebrates, fish, birds, amphibians and any carrion it comes across. Snapping turtles may reach lengths of over 50 centimetres, and have been known to inflict painful bites on swimmers in their habitat.
