Description
Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) swimming underwater. Named because of the colour of its flesh, the green turtle is one of the largest turtles, growing up to 150 centimetres in length. Found in all warm tropical waters, C. mydas is almost completely aquatic. Only the female ever leaves the water: she does so to nest, returning to the beach where she was born. The green turtle is herbivorous, feeding on the algae and plants that grow in shallow waters. Photographed off Sipadan Island, Malaysia.
