Description
Snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina), 19th-century artwork. This turtle lives in swamps, ponds and lakes throughout the Americas. It is omnivorous, eating plant material as well as invertebrates, fish, birds, amphibians and any carrion it comes across. Snapping turtles may reach lengths of over 50 centimetres, and have been known to inflict painful bites on swimmers in their habitat. Artwork from the 23rd volume (first period of 1899) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
