19th century illustration of a ship sailing through a bloom of bioluminescence. Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism. It is produced by a chemical reaction. Bioluminescence involves the light-emitting pigment luciferin and the enzyme luciferase. Charles Darwin noticed bioluminescence in the sea, describing it in his Journal.
