Description
Seal pelt. Cross-section of the pelt (skin and fur) of the Antarctic fur seal, Arctocephalus gazella. The darker guard hairs (top) cover the dense, soft underfur (light brown). The density of the underfur makes it water-resistant. It is the part used by the fur industry. Below the underfur is a layer of blubber (yellow) that insulates the seal from the cold.
