Description
Red and yellow barbet (Trachyphonus erythrocephalus) perching on a branch. Red and yellow barbets are found in woodland and scrubland throughout eastern Africa, from Sudan in the north to Tanzania in the south, where they dig their nests inside termite mounds. The female of the species (shown here) has a red crown, while the male's is completely black and slightly crested. Barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills. Photographed in Kenya, in September.
