Description
1894 A plate showing the display of the birds of Paradise. The birds displaying are wrongly represented. Chromolithograph from Brockhaus' Konversations-lexikon Autorenkollektiv, F. A. Brockhaus in Leipzig, Berlin und Wien, 14. Auflage, 1894-1896. The pose for 1 Paradisea rubra is actually the pose of Goldie's bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea decora). 2 The Superb Bird of Paradise actually produces the famous smiley bird" seen in BBC Planet Earth. 3 - Wilson's is correct, it is not displaying. 4) Standardwing bird of Paradise is not in display. 5) Blue Bird of Paradise actually hangs upside down while displaying revealing red crescent on chest. These birds were well known from dead specimens in museums and the Milinary trade, but artists had to guess behaviour. It would not be untill the latter half of the next century that they were actually observed and described displaying in the wild."
