Description
Protective armour and goggles, First World War. French-British design of armour developed during the First World War (1914-1918). The armour was intended to be worn under a tunic. The soldier is also wearing a French design of splinter goggles and a steel head-dress, intended to be worn under a cap. The First World War saw a large number of wounds due to shrapnel from the artillery shells used to try and break the deadlock of trench warfare on the Western Front. The modern steel helmet was developed in response to this. From the photographic section of the Imperial War Museum.
