Description
Stress patterns and bubbles within a fireman's goggles after they have been exposed to heat. These colourful birefringence patterns are caused when the different colours which make up polarised white light are rotated by different amounts as they pass through areas of high stress. Only those wavelengths of the right orientation can be seen when viewed through a polarising filter. Photograph of a mask used in research conducted by the Health and Safety Laboratory in Britain.
