Description
Prehistoric flint hand-axe. This hand-axe was discovered in France in 1859. British geologists Joseph Prestwich and John Evans studied the axe and photographs of its location and presented their findings in a lecture to the Royal Society. This was crucial evidence that humans were much older than previously thought. It is now thought that this hand-axe dates to around 400,000 years ago, to a time before modern humans had evolved. This hand-axe is part of the collections held at the Natural History Museum, London, UK, and was thought lost until rediscovered there in 2009.
