Description
The German cockroach Blatella germanica, a pregnant female. The cockroach's flattened body is well adapted to living in narrow hiding places; relatively long walking legs allow the animal to run & even make small jumps. B. germanica , the most common species, is found in human dwellings throughout the world. The animal's wide-ranging appetite is the cause of its general unpopularity with humans. Foodstuffs containing sugar & carbohydrates are preferred, but human rubbish, faeces, diseased or decaying animals are also sought out. This results in disease-causing organisms adhering externally to the cockroach & also being ingested & deposited in faeces.
