Description
Pacific Ocean, topographical map. Elevation is colour-coded. On land, low-lying areas are green and yellow, orange and red indicate increasing elevation. In the ocean, the shallow waters of the continental shelf are turquoise, with deeper blues showing deeper water. Numerous deep trenches (dark purple) are seen in the seabed, including the Tonga Trench north of New Zealand, the Kuril Trench northeast of Japan, the Japan Trench east of Japan and the Mariana Trench (arc-shaped below the Japan trench). The Mariana Trench contains the deepest point on Earth, Challenger Deep, at its south end. Its floor is some 10,900 metres below sea level. The island of Hawaii rises over four kilometres above sea level at centre.
