Description
Northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) perched on a branch. This is a male, distinguished by its brightly coloured plumage. The female is a more dull brown. This bird inhabits woodland and scrub in eastern North America, from southern Canada to northern Mexico. It may reach a length of over 20 centimetres. It mainly feeds on fruit and seeds, but it does also take insects. Photographed in Michigan, USA.
