Description
Mute swan (Cygnus olor) feeding as its cygnets look on. This waterbird feeds by upending and pulling up underwater plants. The mute swan is native to Europe and Asia, but has been introduced in many places for its graceful looks. Mute swans mate for life and both parents help to raise the young. It is a large bird, standing over a metre tall and having a wingspan reaching nearly 2.5 metres. Despite its name it is not truly mute, as it often grunts, hisses and snorts. Photographed in Michigan, USA.
