Description
MRSA drug-resistant bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a group of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. These bacteria are resistant to the majority of common antibiotic drugs, and can cause serious outbreaks of infection in hospitals. They commonly infect wounds in hospital patients, which can be fatal. These bacteria have thickened cell walls in places (green). Some strains of MRSA are susceptible to the antibiotic vancomycin, but the bacteria seen here are among the first strains of MRSA to show increased resistance to that drug also. Magnification: x1800 when printed 10cm wide.
