Description
Staphylococcus aureus culture. Laboratory medical worker holding a petri dish containing a nutrient medium that has been used to culture a microbe which has been identified as the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. This bacterium is found on the skin and mucous membranes of humans and many animals. It is usually harmless, but infections can occur. S. aureus can also cause food poisoning, producing toxins that induce vomiting. Certain strains cause the potentially fatal toxic shock syndrome (TSS).
