Description
Voyager image, in simulated natural colour, of Haemus Mons, a mountain near the south pole of Io, one of Jupiter's moons. Haemus Mons is 200 km across and 9000 metres high; the height of Mount Everest, on a world only one quarter the Earth's size. The mountain must be made of rock (silicates), rather than the extremely sulphur- rich lava which covers most of the numerous volcanoes on Io, because a sulphur mountain cannot stand more than 1000 metres high - it would flow out sideways under its own weight. The white deposit on the mountain is sulphur dioxide snow, ejected by some of the smaller volcanoes on Io.
