Description
View of the delta formed by the River Mississippi as seen from Shuttle Challenger on Mission 61A of 30 October to 6 November 1985. This photograph shows clearly the pattern of sediment deposition of this type of river delta. Between the kinks in the river toward top left is the town of Buras. From the tip of Southwest Point (left) to North Point (right) is a distance of around 50 km. In Breton Sound at top right may be seen a chain of small islands. Mission 61A carried the European life and materials science laboratory Spacelab D1 in Challenger's cargo bay, the eight-man crew including four German scientists, the first non-US Shuttle crew members.
