Milling insects for dyes, 19th century. Illustration of a worker with a milling machine being used to grind up cochineal scale insects to produce the crimson-coloured natural dye carmine. Artwork from volume 9 (1870) of a republication of 'Les Grandes Usines', a multi-volume work on French industry by journalist and author Julien Turgan (1824-1887).
