Description
Insects of Surinam. 18th-century artwork from 'Metamorphosibus Insectorum Surinamensium' (1726), a work by the German nature illustrators Maria Sybilla Merian (1647-1717) and Johanna Helena Herolt (1668-1773). Surinam (now called Suriname) is a country in northern South America. This artwork (Plate 9) shows lepidopterans (moths and butterflies) and their caterpillars on a pomegranate plant with flowers and an opened fruit (bottom).
