MESSENGER landing site. Composite satellite image showing the area on the surface of Mercury where NASA's MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) spacecraft landed on 30th April 2015, before impact. The large smooth plains of the 400-kilometer-diameter Shakespeare impact basin occupy the bottom left quarter of this image. Imaged by the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) and Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA) on MESSENGER.
