Description
Mercury in Ptolemy's Almagest (1515). The 'Almagest' is a famous compendium authored by the 2nd century AD Greek astronomer Ptolemy. It summarised the learning of the Ancient Greeks, and was the basis of much of the astronomy and science of medieval Europe until the time of Copernicus (1543). This page is from book 9 of an edition produced in Venice, Italy, in 1515. Book 9 was about the five known planets. This page shows diagrams attempting to explain the motion of Mercury. Mercury is mentioned several times in the accompanying text, which is in Latin. This edition uses Gherardo da Cremona's translation from Arabic.
