Description
Membrane protein synthesis modelling. Supercomputer model of a ribosome (blue, top) creating a cell membrane protein (green). The membrane is the horizontal structure across centre (a lipid bilayer; hydrophillic areas are coloured spheres). The ribosome is docked to a membrane-bound channel called the translocon (grey and orange). This channel structure helps catalyze the insertion of newly formed proteins into the cell membrane. This model combines data from both cryo-electron microscopy and molecular dynamics simulation research. The results from this modelling were published in 2011.
