Description
Membrane carrier proteins. Illustration of the mechanism of action for membrane carrier proteins (orange). These proteins, embedded in the cell membrane (phospholipid bilayer, blue), act as channels for dissolved molecules (solute, triplet of orange spheres) moving into or out of a cell. The solute binds to a hydrophilic pocket (left) and induces a conformational change in the shape of the carrier protein. This results in the release of the solute on the other side of the membrane. This differs from electrochemical diffusion through membrane channel proteins (see C023/8772). For this artwork with labels, see image C023/8773.
