Description
Kidney cortex. Light micrograph of a section through the kidney cortex showing a glomerulus and tubules. The glomerulus (round, upper centre) consists of a tightly coiled network of capillaries. As blood passes through the glomerulus, water and metabolic wastes are filtered through the capillary walls. The water and waste (filtrate) pass into the lumen of the Bowman's capsule (white surround). From the capsule the filtrate drains into the tubules (rounded, in surrounding tissue), where much reabsorption of the filtrate occurs. At right (purple) is an interlobular artery. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size.
