Description
Kidney dialysis machine. Blood flowing through the tubes of a kidney dialysis machine. This is called a dialyzer or haemodialyzer and it acts as an 'artificial kidney' to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood of patients with faulty kidneys. Blood passes out of the patient through a tube inserted in the forearm and is returned after cleaning through a second tube. This cleaning of the blood is usually done by the kidneys. If they are damaged, waste products build up in the blood, which can be fatal. Haemodialysis takes between 2 and 6 hours and must be carried out several times a week.
