Description
Nerve cell bodies. Light micrograph of neurone (nerve) cell bodies. The round or irregular shapes are the neurone cell bodies. The paler circle in the centre of each is the cell nucleus. The nucleus is surrounded by cytoplasm known as perikaryon (dark red). Extending from each cell body are numerous processes (long dark lines). These consist of axons and dendrites. Each neurone has a single axon but may have numerous dendrites. The axon is responsible for carrying impulses (messages) away from the neurone body. The dendrites are the major sites for impulses going to the neurone body. Stain and magnification unknown.
