Description
Lung cancer cells. Light micrograph of clusters of cells from a mesothelioma, a cancerous lung tumour caused by the inhalation of asbestos dust. The malignant cells (stained blue) have a variable size, irregular formation and large nuclei - all of which are signs of cancer. Mesotheliomas develop on the pleural membrane outside the lungs and can cause fluid to collect around it. A mesothelioma may be symptomless or may cause coughs, chest pains and breathing difficulties. This form of cancer often spreads out quickly over the pleura, making it difficult to treat success- fully. Papanicolaou stained sample, taken from pleural fluid. Magnification: x63 at 35mm size.
