Description
Light-mantled albatross chick (Phoebetria palpebrata). The grass-lined nest consists of mud and plant material. Light-mantled albatrosses nest on cliff ledges on islands in the southern oceans, around Antarctica and off southern South America, Australia and New Zealand. They spend most of their time at sea, feeding on squid, krill and fish. The species is also called the light-mantled sooty albatross; it is closely related to the sooty albatross (P. fusca). Light-mantled albatrosses nest on islands in the southern oceans. Some populations are threatened by fishing. Photographed on South Georgia Island.
