Description
Leaf miner tracks. View of a leaf showing the burrowing pattern of tracks made by leaf miner fly larvae. At top can be seen the unidentified fly larvae. Leaf miners eat their way through the spongy green inner tissue of the leaf, creating a tunnel between the upper and the lower leaf epidermis. The tunnel begins narrow (at bottom) and increases in width as the larvae grow in size. When ready to pupate, they chew their way to the outside. This activity may be carried out by the larvae of many species of fly, moth, butterfly and some beetles and members of the Hymenoptera. Photographed in Trinidad, West Indies.
