Description
Large Hadron Collider. Aerial photograph of the border between France and Switzerland below which lies the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), marked here by the red circle. The LHC, the world's largest and most powerful particle collider, began operating in 2008 at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. It is a 27-kilometre-long underground ring around which particles are accelerated close to the speed of light. The collision energy forms new particles that are observed with specialised detectors. The smaller circles are the eight waystations. This south-east view includes Lake Geneva (upper left), Geneva Airport (upper centre) and the Alps (background).
