Description
Mountain gorillas. Orphaned infant mountain gorilla (Gorilla gorilla beringei) being held by a male gorilla that has adopted it. The infant's parents were killed by poachers. The mountain gorilla is a large ape that inhabits the Virunga volcanoes of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It lives in groups led by a dominant male, with several adult females and young. The mountain gorilla is critically endangered, with around 670 thought to exist in the wild in 2003. The main reasons for this are the destruction of its habitat for farmland, and poaching for zoos and trophies. Photographed in the Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda.
