Description
Language-generation brain activity. Coloured posi- tron emission tomography (PET) scan of the areas of the brain active during language generation. The words or sentences are generated from thoughts about auditory clues. The left side of this human brain is seen, with the front at left. Active parts of the cerebral hemisphere are red/orange. Language generated in the frontal cortex (centre left) has its cognition checked in the inferior temporal cortex (lower right). The scan involved injecting the radioactive isotope oxygen-15 into the bloodstream to allow areas of the brain with high metabolic activity to be seen.
