Description
Listening to and repeating words. Colour Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan showing areas of the human brain involved in word recognition. The active areas are highlighted in green and yellow. At top, the subject is listening to words only. The part of the brain activated is the auditory region as word sounds are heard. At bottom, the subject is both listening to words, and repeating them. The auditory (hearing) region is activated as well as the small motor control area (green, above the auditory region) involved in speech. Active areas show cerebral blood flow detected by PET, superimposed onto an image of the brain.
