Description
Imagining words spoken. Coloured Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan showing areas in the human brain involved in imagining words being spoken by someone else. Left-side of the brain is at top; right-side at bottom. Areas of brain activity are highlighted red and yellow. As sentences are being imagined, there is increased activity in the prefrontal cortex (large area at top and bottom); motor areas (above prefrontal); & in the auditory region. These areas are involved in remembering, reconstructing, and listening, as if the words were really spoken. Active areas show cerebral blood flow in the brain as detected by PET.
