Description
Lake Baikal, 19th-century illustration. This lake is located in southern Siberia, Russia. It is 636 kilometres long and 79 kilometres wide. At a depth of 1642 metres, it is the deepest lake in the world. The travellers in the foreground are on the shores of an area that is part of the Yenisei River system, parts of which drain northwards from Lake Baikal. Artwork published in 'Les arteres du globe' ('The Arteries of the Globe', 1888), a work on hydrology and geology by Paul Bory.
