Description
Kepler planetary systems and solar system. Illustration comparing Earth's solar system (bottom) with two planetary systems discovered by NASA's Kepler space telescope, with the habitable zones (where life is possible) shown in green. The orbits of Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are shown. The exoplanets shown here are habitable-zone planets with similarities to Earth. They are Kepler-452 (middle) and Kepler-186 (top). The exoplanet Kepler-452b is close in size to Earth, with a star very similar to that of our Sun. The habitable zone of Kepler-186, which contains the exoplanet Kepler-186f, is very small compared to that of Kepler-452 or the Sun because it is a much smaller, cooler star. Kepler was launched in 2009. This image was published in 2015.
