Description
Series of images showing the cloud of sodium which surrounds Io (arrowed), one of Jupiter's moons, and extends for tens of thousands of kilometres along its orbit. The sodium absorbs and re-emits sunlight at wavelengths of 589.0 and 589.6 nanometres (sodium D-line emission) and so glows with a yellow light, much like sodium streetlights. Sulphur, potassium and oxygen have also been discovered in Jupiter's magnetosphere, concentrated in a torus centred on Io's orbit. The material is being ejected into the magnetosphere from Io's tenuous atmosphere, although the processes involved are still uncertain.
