Description
John Adams (1920-1984) celebrates the success of the proton synchrotron (PS) accelerator at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. On the previous day, November 24, 1959, the PS had accelerated protons to an energy of 24 GeV, beating the previous record of 10 GeV held by the laboratory at Dubna in Moscow. In his left hand Adams holds a picture of a monitor display confirming the energy reached; in his right hand he holds an empty vodka bottle, a gift from the Moscow laboratory to be drunk once the record was broken. John Adams headed the accelerator team at CERN that achieved the 24 GeV record; he later became director of CERN.
