Description
Temptation of Adam and Eve. 18th-century artwork of a religious scene depicted on the mosaic pavement laid before the altar of the Prior's Chapel at Ely, UK. This biblical scene from the Book of Genesis shows Adam and Eve being encouraged by the serpent to eat the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. The mosaic dates from the time of John de Crouden, Prior of Ely from 1321 to 1341. This artwork illustrated a 1790 paper by British antiquarian Richard Gough (1735-1809). Published in Volume 10 (1789-92) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
