Description
'Paradise Lost' by Milton, 19th-century illustration. Adam and Eve facing temptation in the Garden of Eden, with angels overhead and allegorical representations of Sin (left) and Death (right). Satan (in the form of a snake) is coiled around the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. At bottom is a vision of the future, showing their firstborn son Cain murdering his brother Abel. This scene occurs during the epic poem 'Paradise Lost' (1667) by English poet and political writer John Milton (1608-1674). Milton is best known as the author of this celebrated work, which was followed by 'Paradise Regained' (1671). This artwork is from an 1850 French translation of 'Paradise Lost' by French author Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand.
