Description
James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) secondary mirror. This secondary mirror (made of beryllium and coated with gold) was polished at the L3 Integrated Optical Systems at Tinsley in Richmond, California, USA, to accuracies of a millionth of a centimetre. The secondary mirror captures infrared light from the 18 primary mirror segments and relays it to the telescope's science cameras. The JWST is an infrared telescope that is scheduled to be launched in 2021. By using infrared wavelengths, the JWST will be able to see through much of the dust that obscures visible light. It will also study dark matter, thought to form the majority of the matter in the universe. Photographed in July 2011, at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, USA.
