Description
Tatel radio telescope, National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), Green Bank, West Virginia, USA. Also called the 85-1, this 85-foot (26-metre) telescope was built at NRAO in 1958, the first of three of a similar design. The 85-1 was used for much of the early radio astronomy that took place at NRAO, but eventually it was superseded by larger models and was made part of a 3-element interferometer in 1964. Named for US physicist Howard Edwin Tatel (1913-1957), it was used by Frank Drake in 1960 when carrying out the first SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) work, then known as Project Ozma.
