Description
James Clerk Maxwell Telescope at night. JCMT is a 15-metre telescope designed for observations at millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelengths, filling the gap between existing infrared and radio wave telescopes. It is run jointly by the UK, Canada & Netherlands, and is located on the 4200 metre high summit of the dormant volcano Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The photograph shows the carousel doors open while observations are being made. The dish is behind the translucent mylar curtain, which protects against wind. The lights in the building are usually out so as not to interfere with other telescopes.
