Description
Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Satellite image of the ITCZ (white band of clouds), a region near the equator where the trade winds of the northern and southern hemispheres come together. This forms a belt of low pressure due to the vertical ascent of warm, moist air. As the air rises and cools it releases its moisture in a perpetual series of thunderstorms. This image uses cloud data from NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-11).
