Description
Inner ear. Artwork of the labyrinth, the fluid- filled passages of the inner ear. The cochlea (right) is a hollow spiral that contains microscopic hairs that respond to sound vibrations from the middle ear. The cut away section (blue) shows its three canals. Nerves connected to the cochlea carry the sound information as electric impulses to the brain. The three loops (semicircular canals, left) are fluid-filled passages that provide the sense of balance by detecting movement of fluid through the three planes.
