Description
Organ of Corti. Illustration of the organ of Corti in the human inner ear, where sound vibrations are converted into nervous impulses to produce the sense of hearing. This shows a section through the organ, which runs along the centre of the cavity in the coiled, fluid-filled cochlea. Nerve fibres (green) run through bone (yellow) to hair cells supported by the basilar membrane (red). Vibrations in the fluid are transmitted to the hair cells via the tectorial membrane (thick blue membrane, centre left), which overlays them. The hair cells generate nervous impulses which pass to the brain.
