Description
Hair cells of inner ear: false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hair cells of the organ of Corti in the inner ear. This delicate mechanism converts sound waves into electrical stimuli. Three rows of outer hair cells (yellow, V-shaped) and a single row of inner hair cells (pink) are present. Contact with the covering tectorial membrane (removed during preparation) & the endolymph fluid that fills the cochlear duct enables the hair cells to act as transducers of sound waves; neurons serving each cell connect with the brain via the cochlear nerve. Magnification: x380 at 6x7cm size. Plate 5 Viaggio""
