Description
Illustration of a sulphur eruption on the surface of Io, third largest of the moons of Jupiter (planet in background). It is thought that the surface of Io is a crust of sulphur, with an underlying 'sea' of liquid sulphur and sulphur dioxide. The intense volcanism seen on Io is probably the result of the tidal stresses exerted by Jupiter.
