Description
Jupiter and Io. Optical image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope showing part of Jupiter and its orbiting moon Io. At upper centre, Io can be seen against the turbulent clouds of the giant planet of Jupiter. The conspicuous black spot on Jupiter is the shadow of Io. The shadow sweeps across the planet's disc at a speed of 17km per second. Io orbits some 412,600 kilometres from Jupiter and is the innermost of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter. It is a highly volcanic body covered in sulphur and sulphur compounds ejected by volcanoes on its surface. Io is about the same size as the Earth's moon.
